The Fourth Industrial Revolution has been described as “the advent of ‘cyber-physical systems’”, which transfers artificial intelligence into realistic powers of production, human behavior and ability, resulting finally in taking the place of human beings in creating their own society. For Africa, the option facing the fourth industrial revolution is nothing but to embrace it.

Initial reports indicated that the N501 would use a Toyota or Toyota-derived engine, but the size and shape led observers to wonder if the vehicle was using an Audi A6L chassis. Whether either party would consent to Hongqi putting their products together in this fashion, or if that would matter, is unclear.
But whatever the car looks like under the hood and inside, Hongqi’s red flag hood ornament is especially prominent and gives it a distinctly Chinese look. Since its founding in 1958, the company has been closely associated with China’s premiers, including Mao Tse Tung, and other senior Communist party leadership.
“Technology and start-ups are not just about computer software, consumer apps and social networks,” said Fulvia Montresor, Head of Technology Pioneers at the World Economic Forum. “Technology Pioneers 2018 are tackling complex challenges such as environmental sustainability, efficient energy use and access to healthcare.”
The leadership of the 2018 Technology Pioneers is gender diverse, with 25% of the companies (co-)founded by women. Examples include: Viola Llewellyn, Co-Founder and President of Ovamba Solutions, who built a $500 million life insurance investment fund before co-founding Ovamba; Diana Paredes, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Suade Labs, who had a successful career in investment banking before applying her expertise to financial regulation as a service; and Elizabeth Rossiello, Chief Executive Officer and founder of BitPesa, who is an advocate for blockchain technology in emerging markets and financial innovation across frontier markets.

“Islamist terror threats are indeed on the rise on the continent, but that doesn’t mean that every Islamist terrorist needs to be hunted down by U.S. Special Forces,” Mr. Pham said.
Digital skillset
Since taking office in February, Ramaphosa and his administration have dedicated attention to the fourth industrial revolution and what nations like SA need to do to have a workforce ready for a digital future.
Plans are in place to establish a Digital Industrial Revolution Commission, which will include the private sector and civil society, to ensure the country is in a position to seize the opportunities and manage the challenges of rapid advances in ICT. Pundits regard this move as a sign that government is taking steps to ensure capabilities in science, technology and innovation are developed.
Referencing the World Economic Forum predictions, he said the three most important skills for an employee by 2020 will be complex problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity.

Revisiting laws and regulation
For this type of evolution to happen, the onus is on policy makers to revisit current laws and even bring in new regulations. Policy makers need to identify the groups most at risk of losing their jobs and create strategies to reintegrate them into the economy.
Simultaneously, though AI could be hugely beneficial in areas such as curbing poor access to healthcare and improving diagnoses for example, physicians may avoid using this technology for fear of malpractice. To avoid this, we need regulation that closes the gap between the pace of technological change and that of regulatory response. It will also become essential to develop a code of ethics for this new ecosystem.

Diagrams explaining the fourth industrial revolution, like this one by Christoph Roser, are OK as far as they go. Apart from the term "cyber physical systems". Ugh. What they mean is that physical systems are becoming digital. Think of the (IoT) supercharged by artificial intelligence (AI).
But according to Distinguished Professor Genevieve Bell, these diagrams are missing something rather important: Humans and their social structures.
