Australia and New Zealand connected by new cable. (Sylodium, import export directory).

New Zealand's major telecoms players, Telecom, Vodafone and Telstra, will construct a new submarine fiber-optic cable ($60 million) connecting New Zealand with Australia. Target construction completion date has been set from mid to late 2014.

Some people are against this construction, due to the monopoly, that is to say, the price.

The problem could be in that, this measure could make difficult justify building a second cable to the USA, what is exactly the kind of internet infrastructure that New Zealand needs if they want to have a truly resilient and competitive network.

The cable, the fourth linking the two countries (currently there are two cables, owned by Telecom New Zealand) targets to provide enough capacity for the next 20 years.
