GEORGE TOWN: Asia-Pacific will continue to be an important growth market for Osram Opto Semiconductors, says managing director Dr Roland Mueller.
“The region’s demand for solid state lighting (SSL) or general lighting is growing faster than Europe, as most of the LED designing and manufacturing companies are in Asia.
“Penang is a strategic site for us, as it allows Osram to directly ship our products to them,” Mueller said.
He spoke after the launch of Osram Opto Semiconductors general lighting division headquarters together with a research and development (R&D) centre in Penang.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was present to officiate at the event.
“The general lighting segment is the growth driver of the LED industry, as more countries are turning to SSL to light up their hones and streets,” he said.
The new 58,000 sq ft building has the capacity to accommodate 300 workers in the purchasing, controlling, information technology and R&D divisions.
Mueller said, at 77% of sales, Asia accounted for the highest proportion of worldwide sales in the general lighting segment.
“The figure is likely to rise to 80% in 2020,” he added.
In Penang, Osram produces and installs LED in their packages and at the sister plant in Wuxi, China. Since 2014, Osram in Penang has coordinated its global activities in the general lighting segment.
Headquartered in Munich, Osram is one of the two leading lighting manufacturers in the world.
Among products the company produces include lamps, control gear, light management systems, and complete lighting solutions.
Listed on the Frankfurt am Main and Munich stock exchanges, Osram employs 34,000 people worldwide.
