Problems in Canada-EU trade deal. (By Sylodium, global import export directory).

The Canada-EU talks at first were supposed to conclude by the end of 2011, later was extended  to 2012, and now are expected to finish by  the coming weeks.

Due to EU and US are also in negotiations, this changes the attitude of EU with Canada, because EU have the best way to enter in North American market through US without needing Canada, and also, EU want to show the Americans they are willing to make reasonable compromises in  agriculture.

There are still several points in disagreement between Canada and EU.

1. Automobiles: the Europeans estimate a "made in Canada" car should contain at least 25 per cent Canadian content (reality is that many parts are made in US and  in Mexico).

2. Agriculture, Europe wants greater access to the Canadian market for poultry and dairy products and Canada wants to ship more beef to EU.

3. Intellectual property for pharmaceutical products:  EU wants Canada to extend its copyright protections for brand name drugs by two years before generic companies could start producing cheaper versions.

4. Financial services: Europeans want their banks could operate more freely in Canada.

5. Regional Procurement: Canadian provinces, territories and municipalities would not be able to exclude european companies from bidding on projects such as mass transit, infrastructure and utilities.
