Negotiations over a trade deal among 12 countries around the Pacific Ocean adjourned without an accord amid disagreements between the U.S. and Japan over agriculture and automobiles.

U.S. officials said that was "great momentum" in the talks, but were unable to meet their goal of getting an agreement by year's end. The talks are scheduled to resume in late January.

Japan's vice economy minister, Yasutoshi Nishimura, said that negotiators had agreed on about 65% of the major outstanding points. Without giving details, he asked the U.S. for more leeway.

The goal of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, is to reduce or eliminate tariffs on nearly all traded products and establish rules of the road to give companies a level playing field in areas such as intellectual property and the role of government in private enterprise.
