Brookings' Metropolitan Policy Program released a new report on trade between the largest metropolitan areas in North America. Out of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the U.S., the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown area ranked as the No. 1 area that conducted the highest trade value with the two other countries in North America: Canada and Mexico.
In 2010, the Houston area had $35.6 billion in trade with Canada and Mexico. The New York City area ranked as the No. 2 city in the U.S. with $31.5 billion in trade with Canada and Mexico.
In Canada, Houston’s best trading partner was Calgary trade between the two cities totaled $2.6 billion in 2012. In Mexico, Houston’s top trading partner was Mexico City. The trade between these two cities totaled $2.1 billion in 2012. The top commodities traded between the two countries were petroleum and coal products.
