Australia's Trade Minister Richard Marles says he is hopeful Australia can achieve a breakthrough in long-running free trade talks with China.

Mr Marles is pushing for a conclusion to free trade negotiations with China, which have been ongoing since 2005. He says without the agreementAustralia risks falling behind its agriculture competitors, such as New Zealandand Chile, which are already benefiting from China free trade deals.

Australia is also seeking a "significant package" of tariff reductions on products and a service going to China, China's initial response to the proposals Australiahas put forward has been "excellent", according to Mr Marles.
